Apple Watch Series 10 to Feature Larger Screen; Budget Watch SE Model May Come with Plastic Body
Apple is reportedly developing a more affordable smartwatch to compete with Samsung’s budget-friendly Galaxy Watch FE model.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10 might sport a significantly larger display compared to the current generation. Set to debut later this year as the successor to the Series 9, the new model may not include previously rumored features like the magnetic watch strap mechanism. Additionally, Apple is said to be working on a new Watch SE with a plastic body, aiming to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Watch FE.
Larger Screen and Faster Processor for Apple Watch Series 10
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman mentions that the Apple Watch Series 10 will have a bigger screen than the Series 9. It is expected to come in two size options, codenamed N217 and N218, with one featuring the larger display.
Apple’s largest smartwatch model, the Apple Watch Ultra 2, has a 49mm size option with a 1.92-inch display. It remains uncertain if the Series 10 will surpass this size, but leaked CAD renders suggest it might feature a 2-inch screen.
The Series 10 will also be powered by the same processor as the third-generation Apple Watch Ultra, according to Gurman. Although AI features are not expected to be included soon, the new chip will “lay the groundwork” for future AI-powered functionalities.
Health Features on Apple Watch Series 10
Despite progress in areas like sleep apnea detection and blood pressure monitoring, these features are unlikely to be included in the Series 10 due to significant hurdles. The sleep apnea feature is tied to the blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring, which is currently disabled in the US due to a ban.
Similarly, the hypertension detection feature did not meet reliability standards during testing. Consequently, Apple might “postpone the release beyond this year” and opt to display blood pressure trends instead of precise readings.
Apple Watch SE to Feature Plastic Body for Cost Reduction
To compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Watch FE, priced at $199, Apple is reportedly developing a new Watch SE with a plastic body instead of aluminum.
Apple last updated the Watch SE in 2022, and a third-generation model might debut later this year. While it is unclear if the new material will lower the price, more details about the device are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
